We had a pair of cardinals the other day at our feeder. They are so pretty against a drab and often colorless winter landscape. The sudden splash of color is a delight. You can see the pretty goldfinch on the other side of the feeder. Today the sun is shining brightly and the snow […]

There are several big malls in upstate New York. The Carousel, the Oakdale and the Shoppingtown malls are three of them. The closest to us is The Shoppingtown Mall, about 40 minutes away, and it looks as though it is going to be obsolete one day. A lot of stores have closed despite some well […]

I wrote a little about natural gas exploration in a previous post and I drove past a fairly new installation yesterday. It looks like they are really hitting the big time around here and maybe this is what we need to bring this area out of the doldrums. Have you ever seen one of these […]

I have only touched the surface of things to see and do here in New York. There are many books on this state. You can choose from a large selection at Amazon based on your interest, whether it be hiking, boating, hunting, fishing, sports or a myriad of other topics. You can even use Amazon […]

Have I whet your appetite yet with my photos and commentary on the the other side of New York? If so consider moving here and use New York movers while you are at it. Sure New York has it’s issues like any other location. But one thing is certain. It is a very beautiful state […]

Eve though this didn’t take place in the “other side of New York”, it was shock to me that someone so young who did not have any notoriety at all, was found dead in his Manhattan apartment. He apparently died of an accidental overdose and had no history of being admitted to any addiction […]

My son broke his collar bone last night snowboarding. It made me think that medical id tags are a good idea as he has asthma. On my way to the docs today I passed this flock very close to the road.
I love turkeys and always stop and pull over if I can. If I […]

Believe it or not, even in our small town we have a 9 hole golf course and a driving range run by a local family. There are also several nice 18 hole courses about 15 to 30 minutes away.
This reminds me of a prank I played on my husband a few years ago. I bought […]

That’s right. Just because it’s cold or there is snow on the ground doesn’t mean it’s time to hang up the hiking boots. Bring on the snow shoes! Or you can always hike on country roads that have been cleared by the plow using your hiking boots. In any case the right travel gear is […]

Central New York has a few very nice kitchen shops, that make their own cabinetry. We have some of that cabinetry in our own kitchen that comes from a local artisan. You can also choose to use directbuy but my preference is to buy local whenever possible. Put the money back into your own […]

In two words, snow fence. If you don’t have one you will be wasting precious gas on your snow blower or tractor not to mention countless hours of cold hands and feet. I have cut down the number of times I plow by at least 50% if not more, since we started setting up snow […]

If you live in central New York, one of your vehicles is probably a truck. You need the 4 wheel drive for the back roads and the snow and frequently you want a tonneau cover or a cap for the bed for groceries or other items that need protection from the elements. Something you […]

Everyone knows that it gets mighty cold up in Central New York but that does not stop a lot of people from using hot tubs outside. It’s actually very invigorating to be sitting under the night sky in a nice tub of hot water with the snow reflecting the moon and the pretty stars […]

I snapped the first photo on my way home today from shopping for weight accessories. I thought the light streaming through the clouds looked like a waterfall. The second photo is of a flock of turkeys in the farmer’s cow pasture on Stage Road (our road). We get our hay from him. This was a […]

I was out in the wilds of Chenango County today. Check out my view:
I was on Graham Road with an elevation of 1730 feet. It was blowing snow but a mild 31 degrees. I saw a hawk who appeared to be following me and many turkeys out in the corn fields.

As I have mentioned before we have a cabin in Black Lake, right on the water. We love it there. It is a very beautiful place with one of the most scenic and interesting lakes in the state of New York. I sometimes wonder though what it would be like to check out the […]

If you are looking for a condo in New York you can try Condo Hotels to search for places to buy or rent. If you have a property you can list it here as well. The market is still good for investment vacation properties and second homes which is good for us since we […]

We got about an inch of heavy snow that left the world around here looking fresh, clean and pretty this morning. This is the view of the backyard from our deck. Remember, everything looked like this a few days ago and even yesterday.

The times are getting tough around here. There is talk that the nearby minimum security prison is going to close. Add that to Proctor and Gamble closing in Norwich soon and we are losing a lot of jobs. If you own a business it may be time for a small business valuation. One might decide […]

Movies in New York are expensive so we avail of the discount home theater seating right here at home. The local theater in Norwich is reasonably priced during the day but they only have matinees on the weekends. The thing that socks your pocket is the popcorn, candy and soda. Our popcorn at home is […]
