What is This Insect?

This insect was stuck on the screen. Isn’t it neat? But what is it? Anyone know. I wish there was a web site that listed pictures of insects when you don’t know the name. Otherwise how do you figure out what it is?

I think it is a praying mantis. It is such a beautiful color.
My first impression was praying mantis… I am not sure. If I figure it out ~ I will let you know!
I thought a praying mantis at 1st too, but I am not really sure what it is.
I have NO IDEA, but I just twittered it to see if anyone out there does. LOL!
I also thought it looked like a praying mantis. Would be great to know for sure.
I think it is a Praying Mantis too, either that or a type of grasshopper. Great photo!
Looks like a mantid of some kind, i would say either a green mantid or stick mantid. very pretty all the same
Unless its a variation, it’s not a praying mantis. Does have almost a grasshopper look to it. Hope you find out! We had a very large bug once (Nevada) that had two sets of mandibles, horizontal and vertical - very alien looking - that we never did find out what it was… even some specialists in the area had no idea. Might be the radiation LOL!
It sure isn;t a praying mantis, or a wheel bug, or anything I have ever seen before!
It looks similar to a praying mantis, but the head is not the right shape to be one. Not really sure but resembles more of a flying grasshopper.
I was going to go with praying mantis too .. but you’re right, it’s not quite right …
Don’t know what it is but it looks really neat!
Scorpyo1 responded to Julie’s twitter and said it looked like a katydid: http://www.cirrusimage.com/orthoptera_katydid.htm
I think its some sort of cricket myself.
Hmm, I don’t know. I hope you figure it out though.
It’s a Katydid~~
Amazing how we can get info so quickly now. Even though I’m from the Bronx originally (a city girl at heart) we actually had praying mantis insects because my Dad had a garden. So I knew it wasn’t one of those.
Glad you found out what it is. I feel better LOL.
I thought Katydid’s were smaller, but then again I’m no bug expert
Whatever it is, it’s big! Hope you find out!
GREAT WAY TO GET PEOPLE LOOKING UP INFORMATION…
Haven’t seen a Katydid this summer, but Praying Mantis and Walking Sticks seem to be more prevalent.
Thanks for sharing your find.
If I saw that bug on my screen door, I would have to move! I cant handle the big bugs!
I had to come back and find out the answer so I am glad someone knew (it was “bugging” me)
I thought it’s a variation of Grasshopper and I found this small buddy adorable as well
NIce pics….i’m from NY originally…now in Trinidad….b NYC then raised Ossining then Boston, Cal, Oklahoma….It is either a locust or a cicadae (if I spelled it right)…related to grosshopper…. locusts are in swarms in cycles every so many years….come to think of it..its not a cicadea…that makes loud noise signifying the rainy season coming in a few days…its a locust….
Looks like a katydid to me. They are pretty common in our area, and I don’t think they hurt much of anything.
I like your little friend, and that’s a great photo!
my first thought was a katydid. that’s a cool picture.
I am surprised that so many people thought that was a praying mantis. Not even close. I’m glad someone identified it however.
Great picture btw!
It’s actually a common grasshopper. It isn’t poisonous so don’t worry. It isn’t a praying mantis. A praying mantis has long front legs and acts like karate kid.. LOL
There are a lot of those insects in our country Philippines.
Commonly found on bushes or grasslands. Often comes out during summer.
seem like mantis or grasshoper, there still a lot type of insect are not revealed
I am looking for an online guide to help me play the piano to about grade 5 level. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Great blog. Thanks for the interesting article. I will send this story to my friends.
It seems more like a Toothpick grasshopper but i can“t see the long legs.
